The Story Briefly
Planeta. It's a wine or, rather, many wines. But it is also a journey among four estates in the provinces of Agrigento, Ragusa and Siracusa, all in the south of Sicily. The adventure in the wine sector of this enthusiastic trio of young Sicilians, Alessio, Francesca and Santi Planeta, began in the mid-eighties in the countryside around Sambuca in Agrigento province, in the Ulmo district, to be exact.
It was there, where Lake Arancio forms a backdrop for the vines, that the first winery and the first vineyards were created. Today, more than 50 hectares (123.5 acres), a stone farmhouse to serve as the headquarters. In this area, the focus is on Grecanico, Nero d'Avola and Sauvignon Blanc but also, since 1985, Chardonnay, the grape and, therefore, the wine, which more than any other has projected the Planeta wine house onto the world stage. It was here that Cometa was invented.
