The Origins of Michel Lynch

Michel Lynch, a passionate winegrower...

The name of Chevalier Michel Lynch, a passionate winegrower, owner of the Bages estate and founder of the current Château Lynch-Bages is an integral part of the history of the great wines of Bordeaux.

Michel Lynch was born in 1754 and devoted his life to improving the wines on his property, the Lynch-Bages estate. A knowledgeable winegrower, he was one of the main forces in the progress made in the wine sector at the end of the 18th century. He was responsible for the first trials of de-stemming (separating the stalk and the berries) before fermentation, a method that was to become widespread during the 19th century in the Medoc region.

A warm and committed man, he loved to share his passion and organised festivities for the locals at the end of each harvest.

His humanity and managerial talent enabled him to be elected easily to the position of Mayor of Pauillac and he fulfilled his role energetically throughout the French revolution.

By giving Michel Lynch's name to his range of Bordeaux wines, Jean-Michel Cazes wanted to pay homage to this emblematic figure.
