Domaine Confuron-Cotetidot
Yves Confuron, who is now doing wonderful things as regisseur of the Domaine de Coucel in Pommard, directs this estate that possesses 11+ hectares of prime real estate in the Côte de Nuits. One of the rare domaines that produces village wines from four villages (Nuits-St. Georges, Vosne-Romanée, Chambolle-Musigny & Gevrey-Chambertin), they also work vineyards in a number of premier cru and grand cru sites.
The vineyard management here has been on a minimalist track for years, with no herbicides being used and continual plowing being the norm. Some green harvesting is performed if necessary in July, but the emphasis is on pruning short in the beginning. Yields are kept at 35-45 hl per hectare.
Winemaking is rather minimalist as well in that most or all (depending on the vintage) of the cuvees are vinified from whole bunches. This means that the wines show plenty of up-front fruit from the whole berries as well as the airy structure that is derived from vinifying with the stems. Harvest is always late here to insure that the stems are truly ripe. After a long cuvaison (2-3 weeks), the wines are aged in barrel for most of two years, depending on the vintage. New oak levels range from 10-20% in the village wines up to 50% in the grand crus. The wines are bottled unfiltered. |
