Katnook Estate

Katnook Estate is located on the Riddoch Highway, just north of Penola, in the heart of Coonawarra. Katnook is an aboriginal word meaning "Fat Land" referring to Coonawarra's red, fertile soil known today as "terra rossa".

Katnook was the site of Coonawarra’s second vintage made by John Riddoch in 1896. In the 1980, the second chapter of Katnook Estate began when wines were again produced from the property by Senior Winemaker Wayne Stehbens...who still makes Katnook Estate wines today.

Wayne Stehbens boasts an extraordinary track record, having won two Jimmy Watson Trophies (1987 and 1998) and a double trophy at the prestigious International Wine & Spirit Competition in 2003 for Odyssey Cabernet Sauvignon 1998. Further trophies include the 2000 Odyssey winning both the International Wine & Spirit Competition 2005 and Decanter Wine Awards 2005. In the Langton’s Classification IV, Odyssey receives a rating of Outstanding and the Katnook Estate Cabernet Sauvignon a rating of Distinguished.

Today, Wayne works alongside General Manager of viticulture, Chris Brodie drawing fruit from the 198 hectare vineyard to craft wines under the Katnook Estate, Katnook Founder's Block, and Riddoch brands.
